Duties

The primary responsibility for Search and Rescue is an established operation mounted by emergency services, often well-trained volunteers, to find someone or some people believed to be in distress, lost, sick or injured either in a remote or difficult to access area, such as mountains, desert or forest, or at sea, whether close to shore or not, or deep in space. The term can also be applied in urban situations when young children or senile people wander away from their homes and cannot be found.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • The Lead Rescuer may recruit and assign staff within his own department.
  • Providing necessary leadership and guidance to attached SAR Units.
  • Must set up the infrastructure for the SAR Division, including but not limited to equipment, ranks, and recognition.
  • Must set up procedures and areas of operation, including but not limited to, Planetary SAR, Wilderness SAR, Urban SAR, Combat SAR, Deep Space SAR, and Air/Sea SAR.
  • Must provide a monthly progress report of all SAR activities to the Director of AFES.
  • To institute development of a standard set of procedures to follow in SAR operations.
  • To provide a set training regimen for all attached Search ands Rescue units, that includes a set list of rules when working in conjunction with other Commanding Officers.
  • The position of Lead Rescuer is up for review every three months, at which the CinC and DCinC, or assigned committee will review that individuals achievements and accomplishments. If this review does not reveal positive results, that individual may be subject for removal.
